a little US politics

Colin Powell said a great thing: "Is there something wrong with being Muslim in this country? No, that’s not America." Finally someone points out that being a Muslim is not an automatic indicator of terrorism. I blame the Bush Administration and John McCain for this open-ended "War on Terror", as opposed to The World United to Suppress Al-Queda, which I am pretty much for.

Also, California, Alameda County, and especially Berkeley voters: the Green party voter guide (page will lead to PDF) is very helpful. Well-written explanations of the issues and candidates, even the obscure ones like BART board and judge. I may not agree with them 100% but at least I know why. Get this: the Greens agree with the fiscal conservatives (and me) that bonds are a bad idea, better to pay as we go.

And here's to Viggo "War Is Not The Answer" Mortensen, who got me into fandom. It was his smile, from the FOTR extended DVDs, that completely seduced me. May he have fifty more good years.

I saw the video when Powell said all those wonderful things. I'm glad that a well-respected man who knows so much about the current issues speaks his mind.

He's not quite so well-respected now, having failed to notice that the administration was lying to him about the "Weapons of Mass Destruction" in Iraq. But I'm glad he said it, that's for sure!

*nods* He believed the secret service of Germany when he spoke about biological weapons to the UN. Because Germany was against the Iraq war at that time, he trusted them. But even that was mostly fabricated by career-hungry agents and based on one unreliable source ("curveball"). I know that Powell tried his best and refused to say a lot of things the CIA/administration wanted him to say.

Thank you so much for the link to the Green party's voters' guide! I'd like to get my ballot in the mail on Thursday and this will be a great help.

I expected it to be more doctrinaire, and was glad to find it not just earnest but readable. Their non-endorsement of the High Speed Rail "with regrets" charmed the hell out of me.
