fixing the too-big feeds problem

There's a problem with making feeds (syndicated journals) on LJ and clones -- mainly important for communities. If the feed is too big, the receiving journaling system can't handle it and shows an error message that it's too big in the feed user info. This happens when the first 25 posts have a content greater than 300kb. If you are the maintainer of a community, please read this!

brown_betty has a solution:
Check out your lj's rss settings at journalname.livejournal.com/data/atom (substitute your journal name and other journaling system name as appropriate).

If it's set to only show the subject heading, consider going to the admin console and changing your settings using "set synlevel level" and for level, substitute either "summary (first paragraph, so not really a summary) or "full" (like it sounds.) This might be especially helpful if you, like so many, title your entries whimsically.

ETA example: set synlevel title

Contrariwise, if you own a comm, consider setting it using "set for commname synlevel level" and for level, substitute either "title" or "summary", especially if your comm updates a lot.

ETA example: set for billyviggo synlevel summary
Thank you!

ETA: I thought I posted this over here on IJ, but it seems to have been set private, wtf? Anyway, am reposting with improved instructions, especially for communities.

I just can't get this RSS thing inside LJ. I'm using a FF add-on, NewsFox, but I don't like it very much.

Anyway, when Betty writes "check out your lj's rss settings," whom is she addressing? Me as the person who wants to syndicate an over-large LJ?

I hate all the migration stuff. Why couldn't LJ be reasonable? Why hasn't someone invented a good aggregator?

Thank you anyway! I'll keep trying to find a solution.

Ack. That's what I figured. I wrote the sga-newsletter gals again, this time including Betty's info. We'll see what they do, if anything.

Thank you again!

Also, thanks to Mr Kinch, I'm trying out NetNewsWire. Just the trial version, because it's $30, but so far it's cooler than anything else I've tried, including NetNewsWire Lite. I guess we just keep experimenting.
